Members of the DB2 Project will meet to discuss plans and scheduling for this week at SHARE. Attendance by deputy project managers, project officers, and IBM representatives to this project is requested. Although this is a working session, where we look at the administrative tasks needed for the week, we also welcome others to join us and find out the added value that comes with participation.
This session will focus on the new features and capabilities of the next version of DB2, DB2 9.5 with Viper II technology. Some of the new features that will be discussed will include the thread based processing model, new ease of management capabilities, new enhancements to the DeepCompression capability first introduced in DB2 9, some SQL language enhancements to improve compatibility for developers, and additional features that make DB2 9.5 your database of choice going forward. If you are new to DB2 or if you are unfamiliar with the new capabilities that DB2 has acquired since the DB2 9 release and want to decide if DB2 9.5 is worth the upgrade, this is the session that will hopefully answer all of your questions.
Members of the DB2 Project will meet to discuss plans and scheduling for this week at SHARE. See session 1390 which is Part 1 for added description. Although a two part session, members are welcome to come at any time and stay for however long they like. Session planning may begin for the next major SHARE conference.

Abstract:
This session will provide insight into DB2 9 and new technologies that are being developed for future releases of the DB2 for z/OS product. Special focus will be given to technical advances that will assist customers in managing data privacy, security, regulatory compliance, porting SQL across multiple platforms, and the scalability/availability/performance improvements that customers are looking for in DB2. Additionally, as our project opening, this session includes a short introduction to the DB2 Project, what we are doing, and what we have planned for the week.
DB2 V8 and V9 have many new features. This presentation will discuss migrating to V8 and preparing to use the new functions. We assume that you know DB2 V8 and V9. We'll emphasize process and recommendations from many other customers, with pointers to more information. The content of this session will focus on the tasks of the person who installs DB2. Systems programmers and database administrators generally perform this task.
In recent years there has been an increased interest in using DB2 for z/OS as the database of choice for data warehousing. This resurgence is in part due to the introduction of new features and functions in DB2 Version 8 and DB2 9. You can't have a data warehouse without using a database. Despite the rumors, DB2 for z/OS is still a great foundation, if not the place, for your data warehouse. This presentation will demonstrate the enhancements being made to DB2 for z/OS Version 8 and DB2 9 for z/OS in direct support of data warehousing.
Starting back with her first 'Things I Wish They Had Told Me 8 Years Ago' presentation, Bonnie has been telling DB2 DBAs and application programmers about silly little tricks to use to make DB2 behave correctly. With DB2 9 for z/OS several of these silly little tricks are no longer needed because DB2 9 now behaves correctly. Even if you didn't use these tricks you may have had problems without even being aware of them. Rebinding in DB2 9 will resolve the problems you didn't know you had. Attend this presentation to 'unlearn' all the things she has been telling you to do over the years.
This presentation provides an overview of the main features of the DB2 Version 8 and DB2 9 for z/OS Utilities, reviews a set of performance, availability, and usability best practices when using the utility suite, and previews the futures of the IBM DB2 Utilities. Upon completion of this session, the attendee, whose skill level may range from low to high, will be able to identify new utility functions and apply them in their shop.

During this session, a panel of experts from DB2 for z/OS development will answer questions from customers. If you have a DB2 question that you'd like to have answered by someone who actually writes the DB2 code, come and challenge this distinguished panel.
Everyone with an interest in DB2 is invited to attend the DB2 Project dinner. Please meet in the lobby of the Marriott Hotel at 7:00 PM for dinner at a local restaurant. Please give your name to a member of the DB2 project prior by 1:30 on Tuesday so we can make reservations. The cost of the meal will be approximately $35-40.
This is a perfect opportunity for you to meet and socialize with several IBM development representatives as well as project members who work with DB2 every day.
The speaker will discuss DB2 tuning issues and provide performance tips in the context of a high-level roadmap for achieving optimal performance in a DB2 for z/OS environment. He will touch on many aspects of DB2 performance that span application, database, and subsystem tuning. Key topics covered include:
The Tuning Progression
Application Tuning: application code and SQL
Database design and implementation: DDL, indexing, and organization

Abstract:
This presentation will focus on discussing the distributed processing in more detail as well it will also cover more advanced topics. Topics to be covered will include setting goals for distributed processing within WLM, Data Sharing and distributed, utilizing Dynamic Virtual IP Addressing (DVIPA) and Sysplex Distributor, how workstations can be dynamically balanced across the servers of a data sharing group, and how a data sharing group can be 'subsetted' for particular application support or environmental considerations.
DB2 z/OS Data Sharing is well acknowledged for providing the highest availability, addressing both planned and unplanned outages. Nevertheless, an end user only cares that the task is executed, which is not the case if the application server can not reach out to the database server, even if the database server is up and running. This presentation walks through the step-by-step process to setup a distributed application environment accessing a DB2 Data Sharing group for high availability. It discusses frequently asked questions around Sysplex workload balancing and connection concentration.

Abstract:
Key entry points for SOA initiatives include connectivity, reuse, and information access. A good first step for any SOA initiative is identify key assets to service-enable. Enterprise databases are a key information asset that often have existing encapsulated business logic that should be considered as a target for service-enablement. Unfortunately, a key inhibitor for SOA adoption is lack of skills. IBM Fellow Curt Cotner, VP and CTO of Database Servers, describes IBM's vision for reducing inhibitions for data-driven application development, including end to end monitoring of applications, database management and governance, with a focus on recent developments for easily turning database access into a secure Web service with robust quality of service.
